Tony is a visionary and engaging executive known for his ability to envision and create successful outcomes in complex situations. Tony knows how to smartly blend strategic vision with detailed analysis and execution plans - for organizations and security programs. While at HSS he led the organization during a significant period of growth. He is a continual learner and has an entrepreneur's spirit when applying innovation and new business concepts that keep environments safe.
Tony has a tenacious commitment and passion for quality, customer service, innovation and evidence based decision making while striving to raise the bar of professionalism in the healthcare security industry. A recognized and active industry contributor - he is at the forefront of establishing recognized best practices in security operations and security design principles. Tony is a long-time member of the IAHSS Council on Guidelines and a member of the task force that authored the Security Design Guidelines for Healthcare Facilities.
Tony contributes regularly to the professional literature of the security field with a specific expertise in the healthcare industry. He is the co-author of Hospital and Healthcare Security, which is widely considered the definitive book for hospital security. In a book review published by ASIS International, the new edition was heralded as “the best single resource for the healthcare security practitioner.” Hospital and Healthcare Security is the primary text and study material for the coveted CHPA credential.
His articles and quotes have appeared in national publications and media outlets such as Joint Commission Resources, CNN, Modern Healthcare, the New York Times, and many professional trade publications. He frequently is quoted in national broadcast media on healthcare security-related topics. York also is a court recognized expert and a frequent lecturer on healthcare security and leadership.
A renowned and respected security professional with nearly three decades of experience leading complex protection programs and operations. He is board certified in security management with the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation and holds the Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) designation. He holds a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State University, an M.S. in Loss Prevention and Safety from Eastern Kentucky University, and an Executive MBA from the University of Denver.
